Will Qonto be compliant with the Belgian e-invoicing directive (Peppol)?

  • Updated

What is e-invoicing and why is it relevant for Belgian businesses?

E-invoicing (electronic invoicing) is becoming mandatory in Belgium starting January 1, 2026, for all Belgian VAT taxpayers conducting B2B transactions. This regulatory change, pending final EU Council authorization, will require businesses to issue and receive structured electronic invoices that comply with European standards (EN16931-1 and CEN/TS 16931-2), likely using the PEPPOL-BIS format and PEPPOL network.

This represents a significant shift in how Belgian businesses handle their invoicing processes, aimed at improving transparency, reducing fraud, and streamlining administrative procedures.

Will Qonto offer e-invoicing compliance features for Belgium in 2026?

At this time, Qonto will not be offering e-invoicing compliance features for the Belgian market in 2026.

While we recognize the importance of this regulatory requirement and have been closely monitoring the evolving legislation, we have made the strategic decision to focus our resources on other critical features and improvements that will deliver the most value to our Belgian customers in the near term.

What about Qonto's current invoicing tool for Belgian customers?

Our standard invoicing tool will be temporarily suspended for Belgian customers during 2026 as we assess the regulatory landscape and technical requirements for e-invoicing compliance.

What does this mean in practice?

Starting in 2026, the invoicing tool will remain visible in your Qonto app, but you will not be able to create new invoices. The tool stays accessible so that customers who have previously used this feature can continue to view and access all invoices they created through the app.

This decision allows us to:

  • Ensure we fully understand the final regulatory requirements once they are formalized
  • Evaluate the technical infrastructure needed for full compliance
  • Assess the investment required versus the value delivered to our customer base
  • Explore potential partnerships or solutions that could better serve our customers' needs

When will Qonto review its position on e-invoicing for Belgium?

We will conduct a comprehensive review of our e-invoicing strategy for Belgium during the first half of 2026. This review will take into account:

  • The finalized regulatory requirements and Royal Decree specifications
  • Market adoption rates and customer feedback
  • Technical feasibility and required resources
  • Strategic priorities for the Belgian market
  • Potential partnerships with specialized e-invoicing providers

Important note: At this stage, we are making no commitment to develop or launch e-invoicing features following this review. The decision will depend on multiple factors including regulatory clarity, resource availability, and strategic alignment with our product roadmap.
